A man shot his ex-wife's boyfriend to
death before killing himself in broad
daylight Sunday afternoon at Mantua's
Villages of Berkley development, authorities
said.
Stephen V. Newcomb, 45, was shot at 3:42
p.m. at the foot of a stairway of the upper-
level condominium he shared with his
assailant's former wife, in the 1000 block
of Tristram Circle, said Gloucester County
Prosecutor Sean Dalton.
He was shot at five times by Michael
Targett, 52, whose last known address was
Sicklerville, Dalton said.
Targett then walked to his pickup truck,
which was parked near the building, and
got inside for a short time before walking
approximately 25 yards to a small wooded
area, where he shot himself in the head,
Dalton said.
As he walked into the woods, Targett
dumped used and unused rounds from his
.357-caliber Magnum handgun to the
ground. He then reloaded and shot
himself, Dalton said.
Several residents were witnesses to the
shootings and called 911.
Targett and Newcomb were pronounced
dead at the scene. Targett died of a
gunshot wound to the head. Dalton
declined to say where Newcomb was shot.
Dalton also declined to say whether Targett
was waiting for his victim.
Newcomb's girlfriend, whom Dalton
declined to identify, was not home at the
time of the shooting. Dalton said police
have had prior contact with the Targetts.
An ongoing investigation is being conducted
jointly by the Gloucester County
Prosecutor's Office and the Mantua Police
Department.
