NATCHITOCHES, La. — A 32-year-old Natchitoches (NACK-uh-tesh) man faces life in prison for shooting his girlfriend last year.
A Natchitoches Parish jury convicted Rodney Ian Barnes on Tuesday of the second-degree murder of 35-year-old Chackawanda Beard, also of Natchitoches.
The Times reports that Beard's two daughters testified that Barnes knocked their mother onto a bed on June 23, then stuck a pistol into her neck and ordered her to get up. District Attorney Van Kyzar says that when she didn't, Barnes fired.
District Judge Eric R. Harrington scheduled formal sentencing in April, but life in prison is the mandatory sentence for second-degree murder.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
