YORK, Pa. (AP) — A Pennsylvania woman who claimed she shot her live-in boyfriend at least seven times after mistaking him for an intruder has been convicted of first-degree murder.
Fifty-one-year-old Joann Helfrich will spend life in prison for the Oct. 12, 2010 killing of Fred McClure.
Jurors needed less than an hour Thursday to reject the defense claim that Helfrich mistakenly killed McClure inside their York apartment when she woke up after hearing a noise.
Helfrich's attorney told the jury his client was distraught when she called 911 and tried to render aid.
Prosecutors countered that Helfrich lied about being in bed and police who responded found there was plenty of natural light. An expert also found Helfrich fired some of the shots while standing over McClure.
