COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Columbus police detectives are investigating an apparent murder-suicide that occurred on the city’s northeast side Tuesday night.
Columbus police and medic personnel were called to a home in the 5500 block of Cranbrook Lane at about 9:12 p.m. Tuesday after receiving a call from a male stating that he could see his parents inside of their home and that his father was on the floor, bleeding. The caller stated he was unable to enter the home.
Detectives tell NBC4 an officer responded to the home to investigate. Upon arrival, the officer reported hearing a single gunshot from inside the home. The officer forced entry and discovered the bodies of a man and a woman inside of the home with gunshot wounds. They were pronounced dead at the scene.
The initial investigation indicates Erica L. Smith-Penick, 50, shot Anthony L. Penick, 51. Detectives believe Erica then shot herself as the first responding officer was attempting to make contact with her at the door.
