HUNTSVILLE, AL -- Police believe a man who shot two people in a local Walmart parking lot this afternoon was targeting his ex-girlfriend.
Authorities said Luke Allen Bates, 44, shot a man and a woman around noon Monday in the parking lot of the University Drive Walmart, killing the man, 25-year-old Stan Ryan Malone. The injured woman, Martha Ann White, 41, is in stable condition at Huntsville Hospital.
Police said Bates and White used to be in a relationship, but weren't together at the time of the shooting. White and Malone were both employees of Walmart, but police didn't release information about their relationship.
After shooting Malone and White, Bates fled from the parking lot in a white Chevy truck, headed for Tennessee. About an hour later, police found Bates at his home in Taft, Tenn., suffering from a single gunshot wound they believe was self-inflicted.
Bates is listed in critical condition at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville.
