OAKLAND — The estranged wife of a 24-year-old man stabbed to death Tuesday night in East Oakland was charged today with the killing, police said.
Marissa Manning, 22, of Oakland, was charged with murder. She surrendered to investigators Wednesday afternoon at police headquarters.
She had been sought in the fatal stabbing of Jonathan Bennett, 24, of Oakland, which happened about 11:05 p.m. Tuesday in the 2400 block of 89th Avenue. He died at Highland Hospital at 11:32 p.m. Tuesday.
Sgt. George Phillips said that shortly after the stabbing, Manning phoned a person who knew Bennett and admitted her involvement in the stabbing. Bennett was stabbed several times with a knife that has not been recovered.
Phillips said Manning refused to talk about the stabbing to investigators. But she did tell police that the couple had a history of domestic violence and that she had obtained a restraining order against Bennett. Police were not able to confirm how long they were married or how long they were separated.
Philips said police still are trying to determine how the pair met on 89th Avenue, since neither one lived in the area.
Manning is being held without bail.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
