RIVERSIDE, Iowa—
On May 1st, Sharon Gerot, 54, was shot by a semi-automatic handgun while riding a lawn mower in her backyard.
Her boyfriend, Thomas Lee Hansen, 70, was charged for one count of first-degree murder.
According to KWWL, Washington County Dispatch received a call about a shooting around 4 p.m. Officials discovered Gerot lying in the yard and pronounced her dead at the scene.
Hansen and Gerot allegedly had a domestic dispute the morning of the first, leading officials to suspect he had murdered Gerot.
According to the Associated Press, the two had been living together for years.
Hansen is a retired Johnson County emergency management coordinator and had worked for the Iowa City fire department.
The two had planned to move to Yellowstone National Park.
Hansen’s trial is set for January 24th.

(NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
