Montgomery, AL: Man charged in girlfriend's shooting death

A Montgomery man has been charged with murder in connection with the shooting death of his girlfriend.

Kenneth King, 19, of Stokes Road was handling a loaded handgun at a city resi-
dence when the weapon discharged early Tuesday, according to a news release from the Montgomery Police Depart­ ment.

King's girlfriend, 19-year-old Marquishia Thigpen of Frost Street, was shot and killed, the news release states.

The shooting occurred at a residence in the 300 block of Mooreland Road. Thigpen was pronounced dead at 3:12 a.m. after being taken by a private vehicle to Baptist Medical Center South, according to police.

King was charged Tuesday morning at police headquarters before being trans­ported to the Montgomery County Detention Center, where he was being held under $75,000 bond, according to the release.

The slaying marks Montgomery's 20th homicide of the year, the release states. The investigation into the shooting is continuing.
