SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. -- A man and woman were found dead in a Sandy Springs home Wednesday morning, according to the Sandy Springs Police Department. Police said it was a murder-suicide.
Wife Killed In Apparent Murder-Suicide
Around 10 a.m., Irene and Jamal Mickens were found at a 19th-floor condo in the Park Towers complex on Hammond Drive. The couple was married but separated, according to Sandy Springs police spokesman Steve Rose.
Irene Mickens previously filed a family violence complaint against her husband in March 2009. It resulted in a temporary restraining order but was dismissed the next month. She also filed for divorce in April, but it was dismissed two months later.
Irene Mickens was last seen arriving at the Park Towers condo Tuesday. Rose said her husband had invited her over around 6 p.m. Sometime between then and early the next morning, Jamal Mickens shot her in the head and then himself, Rose said.
When police found the bodies, the couple’s two children, 7-year-old Evan and 5-year-old Ava, were missing. Officers later found the children at their father’s sister’s home in McDonough, where he dropped them off before the shooting, Rose said.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
