Long Beach, CA: Police Fatally Shoot Suspect After 4-hour Barricade

LONG BEACH (KTLA) -- A Long Beach neighborhood was shutdown for 4 hours after a hostage situation ended in a fatal officer-involved shooting.

It all happened around 12 p.m. when Long Beach Police Department received a call of a domestic dispute at a residence on the 6100 block of Rosebay Street.

Police said a female caller claimed her estranged husband broke into her parents home and threatened to kill them.

The surrounding area was shut down as police and SWAT attempted to make contact with the male suspect inside the home, who is known to carry guns and knives.

Around 4 p.m. a confrontation with officers occurred outside the home, and that's when the shooting occurred.

The suspect, who has not been identified, was declared dead at the scene.

No officers were hurt.

"It's tragic as any case where there is a loss of life," Chief Jim McDonnell said. "We're fortunate that the officers involved in this came out okay and there is no doubt in my mind that the lives of two people were saved by the officers this afternoon."

An investigation is currently underway.
