PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Abused by his father as a boy, Maine Gov. Paul LePage is adding his voice to those expressing "zero tolerance" for domestic abuse following a pair of highly publicized killings.
LePage on Saturday used his weekly radio address to talk about domestic violence, saying his own background makes him sensitive to the subject. He says domestic violence "is ripping apart families, friends and entire communities" and that "we can no longer stay silent."
Last month, a man gunned down his wife in Winslow before leading police on a chase and killing himself; a week later, a man killed his estranged wife and their two children before taking his life in Dexter.
So far this year in Maine, seven out of 13 homicide victims were killed by a spouse or loved one. LePage is urging abuse victims to seek help from a state hotline.
