Dale Wilson, a West Richland reserve officer and emergency dispatch supervisor, told his sister how to handle her husband's increasingly aggressive behavior just weeks before the man showed up at her Portland-area workplace armed with several guns.
Teresa Beiser, 36, was shot and killed Tuesday by her husband, Robert, who then fatally shot himself. Two of her co-workers also were shot and wounded.
Wilson, a Pasco resident who's lived in the Tri-Cities for 15 years, said his sister's death has spurred him to advocate against domestic violence with the hope that women in her situation won't face the same fate.
"Nobody should have to go through this," Wilson said Friday as he drove home from Portland.
Wilson, 41, offered his advice to women living with violent or potentially violent partners: Begin keeping a journal that details abusive incidents, including when they happened. Go to your local police department and file a report. And get a no-contact or restraining order.
"If things start getting worse, (the women) need to go to a safe place," he said.
His sister's death came a week after she filed for divorce from her husband of 15 years.
Wilson wondered aloud Friday whether he should have told his sister to move or transfer jobs, so her husband wouldn't know where to find her.
"He went down there with one thing in mind, and he accomplished it," Wilson said.
Memorial services for Teresa Beiser haven't been set, said Wilson, who is working toward getting custody of his sister's two children, an 11-year-old son and 14-year-old daughter.
Wilson's parents, Dale and Sharyl Wilson, moved to Pasco in July.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
