SAN ANTONIO -- A murder in San Antonio led to an officer-involved shooting miles away in New Braunfels.

Police received a call about shots fired at the Limestone Oaks Apartments on Wurzbach Tuesday night. Officers didn't find anything and left. About an hour later, police returned after the family of 25-year-old Jennifer Trader called police and said they were worried about her safety.

"She was beautiful," said a friend who also lived at the complex. "She was a nice girl. She was a nice neighbor. You know what I mean? She was just a good girl. She was very nice."

Police busted in the door of Trader's apartment and found her body lying on a bed. She had been shot at least once in the head.

"Two officers just banged the door open...," said neighbor Irma Gonzalez. "They were calling for the person to come out, and they wouldn't come out...Two officer came out and yelled 'It's a homicide. It's a homicide. She's dead.'"

"It's horrible to hear that a murder happened," neighbor Nick Ramirez told News 4 WOAI.

Police say Trader was killed by her boyfriend, 30-year-old Jamie Lee Almaguer. Almaguer fled the apartment after the shooting, but made contact with police along the way.

"Throughout the evening, he did make several phone calls with our negotiators indicating that he did intend to have a shootout with police and confirmed to us that he did have a weapon with him," explained Lt. Michael Penshorn of the New Braunfels Police Department.

Hours later, police spotted Almaguer in New Braunfels walking along Interstate 35 with a gun in his hand. Investigators said Almaguer tried to get away, but was shot and killed during an exchange of gunfire with officers.

It was a sad chain of events one of Trader's friends said didn't have to happen.

"Young girls in situations like that think they can't get out," the friend said as she cried. "They can. It's never too late to get out."
