BRIDGETON, N.J. - A New Jersey man who fatally shot his 17-year-old ex-girlfriend and her sister has been sentenced to consecutive life terms.
James Royal of Bridgeton shot himself in the chest after shooting the sisters, but survived.
He was convicted of murder last month by a Cumberland County jury. Defense lawyers had sought conviction on a lesser charge, citing his mental state.
Royal, now 27, killed Felicia Flores and her 18-year-old sister, Natasha Ferrer, at their Bridgeton home in January 2003.
The day before the shootings, Royal took Flores into the woods, showed her a gun and a bullet with her named etched on it and told her to kill him, although he never handed over the gun. Flores called police, who searched for Royal but could not find him.

We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
