UNION COUNTY, S.C. -- Investigators in Union County are investigating a double shooting that left a man dead and his wife recovering from a gunshot wound to the head.
Deputies said a teenager who was in the home on Hoyt Drive called 911 at 6:50 a.m. Monday.
When deputies arrived, they found a 47-year-old Barry Keith Thompson and 42-year-old Jackie Lynn Thompson with gunshot wounds. They also found a .25 caliber automatic pistol.
Chief Deputy Perry Haney said Barry Thompson was taken to Wallace Thompson Hospital where he died. The autopsy found that the cause of his death was a gunshot wound to the head.
Haney said Jackie Thompson was taken to Spartanburg Regional. News 4 has learned she was admitted in fair condition, but her condition was improving throughout the day.
Haney said the couple had teenage children who were home at the time of the shooting and it was one of them who called 911.
Deputies said the Thompsons were the only people involved in the shooting.
Haney said, "We're not sure it was an attempted murder-suicide or whether it was something else."
Those who know the Thompsons told News 4 they are “good people and good parents.”
The bullet removed from Barry Thompson has been sent to the State Law Enforcement Division. Investigators were also testing for gunshot residue on the husband and wife.
Haney said, "It's tragic anytime something like this happens. It's horrible for everybody involved. As far as we know, we've never received any calls to this family, this house, this location. As far as I know, these were good people just having some kind of problems."
