ROYAL OAK, Mich.(WXYZ) - Royal Oak officers responded to a domestic dispute in the 800 block of Florence. The couple had been arguing over the course of the night about the husband’s drinking.
The wife went to bed and was later awakened by her husband who claimed to have killed the family dog, a Beagle mix. The wife called the police department and when the officers arrived, they discovered that the husband had in fact shot the dog in the backyard.
Royal Oak police determined the dog was shot with a high powered pellet gun. The dog was shot at least once in the head but police have not determined how many times the Beagle was shot. Police have the pellet gun in their possession and the dog has been sent to Michigan State University veterinary diagnostic lab for a necropsy (dog autopsy).
The 39 year old husband was arrested for Cruelty to Animals and Discharging a Firearm in the City of Royal Oak. The suspect has been released pending the results of the necropsy.
The husband, although he was arrested for animal cruelty and discharging a firearm, has yet to face charges because police are waiting on the necropsy report.
Royal Oak Police said the husband made a statement to his wife after shooting the dog that he killed the dog because he thought that is what she would have wanted.
