RENTON, Wash. -- Police searched a swampy area near a Renton park on Thursday for the remains of a woman who detectives say was fatally stabbed more than a year ago. Her ex-boyfriend admitted to the killing, according to court documents.
Kathy Chou, 19, was a senior at Lindbergh High School who was last seen on April 18, 2010. She told friends she was going to Renton near Southcenter
Video from Chopper 7 showed numerous police vehicles at the scene of the search at the end of 124th Avenue Southeast near Boulevard Lane Park in Renton.
In court documents, a Renton police detective wrote that phone records showed that Chou exchanged text messages with the suspect the day she disappeared. At the time, the suspect told police he was with another friend; the friend corroborated the suspect's story.
Last month, the friend's roommate told police that he saw the suspect covered in blood the night Chou disappeared, the detective wrote.
Detectives interviewed the suspect on Wednesday, and he admitted to stabbing Chou in the throat, killing her and burying her body in a swampy area under power lines near his parents' home.
He told police Chou had "been causing trouble in his life by threatening his new girlfriend," according to court papers, and that he attacked her with the knife on April 18, 2010, killing her after a struggle.
Police asked anyone with information about Chou's disappearance and death to contact the Renton Police Department at 425-430-7500 or Detective Barfield at 425-430-7534.
