MONTCLAIR — After a day-long manhunt, police have arrested a Bloomfield man for the murder of his wife in Montclair, according to Montclair police and the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.
“I want to reassure the residents of Montclair that this is a targeted incident,” said Montclair Police Chief David Sabagh.
The suspect, Khalid Khan, 42, faces first-degree murder and weapons charges. He is being held tonight in lieu of $1.5 million bail.
Around midnight last night, police arrived at his wife’s apartment on Wheeler Street in Montclair and found Shazmina Khan, 31, dead, authorities said.
The woman's daughter, 8, was in the apartment during the alleged murder, neighbors told The Star-Ledger.
The couple was estranged, and there was a history of domestic complaints, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
A preliminary investigation indicates the victim had trauma to her body caused by a sharp object, but the cause and manner of death will be officially determined following an autopsy Tuesday, the prosecutor's office said.
In her memory, Khan’s friends and neighbors gathered for a candlelight vigil outside her apartment tonight.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
