Henderson, NV: Coroner: Woman found in Henderson apartment died of strangulation

A woman found dead in a Henderson apartment earlier this week has been identified as 29-year-old Jamie Tangan of West Covina, Calif.

The Clark County Coroner’s Office ruled the death a homicide by asphyxia and ligature strangulation.

Henderson Police arrested 50-year-old James M. Hill on Wednesday evening after he called 911 claiming a prostitute he arranged to have sex with was dead in his apartment.

An arrest report released Friday states Hill told officers he called for a prostitute Monday night from a Las Vegas escort service and said he was intoxicated when she arrived. He said when he woke Tuesday morning he found her dead in his bed and that her death must have been accident after he choked her during sex.

Hill also admitted that he had earned a degree in respiratory therapy and that he knows the signs of respiratory distress.

Hill said he thought about dumping the body and tried to commit suicide by taking more than 60 nighttime ibuprofen pills before he called 911 the following morning. He was released from St. Rose Dominican Hospital Wednesday and police arrested him in connection with the murder.

Police believe he might have strangled her with his hands and a piece of ribbon. He also couldn't explain cuts and scratches on his body.

According to the police report, an ex-wife of hill told police that Hill "would drink alcohol and then become aggressive and sexually abusive ... At one point he had choked her."

Hill is being held in the Henderson Detention Center for murder with a deadly weapon. His bond is set at $500,000.
