A Draper man was arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty Friday after allegedly beating his wife’s dog to death, police said.

Kenneth Karl Morley, 56, was arrested after his wife brought her dog to an area animal hospital, where a small, round hole was found in its skull, according to jail documents. She told workers her husband had beaten the dog.

Morley later admitted to beating the dog repeatedly with a broom and to witnessing the injuries to the animal, officers wrote. However, the injury to the dog was smaller than the broom handle, officers wrote, but Morley would not identify any other object he used.

He was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of third-degree felony cruelty to animals.

He is being held on $5,000 bail.
