Troy W. Smith was arrested Thursday night by the Marion County Sheriff’s Department on manslaughter charges related to the shooting death of his wife.
Smith was “playing with a pistol” at the couple's home in Columbia when the firearm went off. A round struck his wife, Susan Smith, once, according to a news release from the sheriff’s department.
Troy Smith transported his wife to Marion General Hospital. They treated the victim then transported her to Forrest General Hospital where she later died.
Troy Smith is being held at the Marion County Jail on a charge of manslaughter. His bond is set at $20,000.
