A Beaumont police spokeswoman says a Beaumont police officer was killed after his unit was hit during a chase that ended on Dowlen Road in Beaumont's west end Friday night.
Officer Carol Riley confirmed to 12News HD that the officer has died.
Officers tell 12News HD crews that they were responding to a domestic violence situation in which a weapon was involved. Police spotted the man behind Kohl's and he then sped off on Old Dowlen Road in a Dodge Nitro. From there he jumped onto Eastex Freeway, took Interstate 10 to College westbound and turned southbound on Dowlen Road.
The officer was in the center lane on Dowlen ahead of the chase and was retrieving spike strips and his safety vest out of the car's trunk when the suspect's vehicle veered toward him and hit the patrol car. Witnesses said the Dodge went into a handstand position after hitting the car.
Witnesses say the officer was taken to hospital in an ambulance with at least two other patrol cars escorting the ambulance. Officer Veronica Payton who is on the scene says the suspect is a white male who is in the hospital and in fair condition.
Witnesses tell 12News HD Phelan to Westgate is currently closed.
