Charlestown, WV: Fight Over Girlfriend Ends in Murder

A woman, her boyfriend, her ex-boyfriend and a gun turned out to be a deadly combination Tuesday morning in Charleston.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A woman, her boyfriend, her ex-boyfriend and a gun turned out to be a deadly combination Tuesday morning in Charleston.

One of those men is dead, and the other has been charged with murder.

“It started as an argument over a girl,” Charleston Police Sgt. Bobby Eggleton said.

Police say Donald Raines shot Jerry Baldwin several times at a house along Mary Street just after 2 a.m. Tuesday.

“The shooter lives there, and the girlfriend lives next door,” Eggleton said.

Police say Raines saw his ex-girlfriend coming home with Baldwin. An argument started, and seconds later it became a crime scene.

“I've lived on this hill 50 years,” Michael Todd, a neighbor, said.

Todd has seen a lot over the years, but says this is too close for comfort.

“It's getting pretty close to home,” Todd said. “You're not safe in the day time. You're not safe at night.”

In this case, Baldwin is the one who wasn't safe. He spent the morning in surgery, fighting for his life.

Raines was charged with malicious wounding and immediately posted bond, but then Baldwin died.

Raines was arrested a second time and charged with murder. He is in the South Central Regional Jail.
