MOUNT PLEASANT — Gary J. Reen faces up to life in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the April shooting death of his wife.
Reen, 56, accepted prosecutors’ plea agreement on Monday, in which prosecutors will drop the initial open count of murder that Reen faced.
Reen shot and killed his wife, 51-year-old Cheryl Reen, on April 1 in the couple’s pole barn at East River near South Leaton in Chippewa Township. Gary Reen’s son, Gary Reen II, testified at Reen’s preliminary hearing that the father confessed to the son regarding the shooting. Reen turned himself in to police the night of the shooting.
If Reed had been convicted of first-degree premeditated murder, he would have faced a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Reen also pleaded guilty to possessing a firearm during the commission of a felony, which carries a mandatory two-year consecutive sentence.
Isabella County Trial Judge Mark Duthie is scheduled to sentence Reen on Dec. 8.
