A man and woman were found shot to death in a South Bay home Tuesday in a suspected murder-suicide, authorities said.
A neighbor made a 911 call about 1 p.m. to report hearing gunfire from inside a small rental residence behind a house in the 900 block of Fifth Street in National City about 1 p.m.
Officers went to the flat and attempted in vain to make contact with any occupants, then called in crisis negotiators and a special weapons and tactics team, Assistant Chief Manny Rodriguez said.
As authorities continued trying to get a response from inside the home, officers cleared about 25 people out of a nearby apartment building and several adjacent houses.
About 3:45 p.m., members of the SWAT team forced entry to the studio flat and found the two unidentified dead people, Rodriguez said.
A pistol lay near the bodies, he said. Preliminary evidence at the scene suggested that the deaths are a case of murder-suicide, according to Rodriguez.
