LA VERGNE, Tenn. - A woman was killed while trying to protect her friend from a vicious attack in Rutherford County.
Police said Kenny Thomason, age 47, was released from jail a week ago and was ordered by the court to stay away from his ex-wife.
Despite the order, she was letting him stay at her home on Tuffnell Drive in La Vergne, but had kicked him out earlier in the day.
Police said Thomason returned to the residence around 10 p.m. and was trying to break in. The woman, who police did not identify, called her friend, 42-year-old Kim Kuhlman, for help.
Kuhlman apparently tried to stop Thomason. Investigators said Thomason then turned his rage to Kulhman and stabbed her to death. The ex-wife was not hurt.
When police arrived at the home they found Kuhlman bleeding on the ground. She was taken to Stonecrest Medical Center in Smyrna where she later died.
"It's a very sad situation," said Lt. Kyle Norrod with the La Vergne Police Department. "This was a friend coming over to help another friend in a bad situation."
Thomason was booked into the Rutherford County Jail and charged with murder.
Officials said Thomason has a history of domestic violence charges.
