SWEETWATER, Tenn. (WVLT) -- One man has been charged in connection with the death of Janet Buchanan, who was found dead in her Sweetwater home just after midnight Friday morning, according to the Monroe Co. Sheriff's Dept.
Authorities said Brently M. Israel was charged with First Degree Homicide as well as with being a felon in possession of a handgun. He was taken to the Monroe Co. Jail where he is being held without bond.
Monroe Co. deputies found Buchanan's body after responding to a report of a shooting at the mobile home on Veterans Street.
Neighbors say they never saw problems with the couple, who lived there for about three months.
Jerry McKeehan is a veteran whose VFW post is near the crime scene. "Pretty frightening being this close to the VFW, it really is," he said.
Down the road, a young mother of two hopes the killing was isolated. "Usually it's very quiet and the police keep it safe. This is the first I've heard of a homicide nearby," said Karen Martin.
She might be able to rest easier knowing a person of interest is in custody, though he's yet to be charged. "I hope nothing ever happens like that again in this neighborhood."
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
