Police have released the names of the husband and wife involved in a domestic dispute in their Modesto home Sunday that ended with the woman's death.
Police identified the wife as Sharon Lorraine Azevedo, 60, and the husband as Mitchell Joseph Azevedo, 53.
Sharon Azevedo was pronounced dead at a Modesto hospital after being shot in her home in the 3300 block of Creek Bed Court, about a quarter-mile southeast of Enochs High School.
Mitchell Azevedo was booked at the Stanislaus County Jail on suspicion of murder and the use of a firearm. He is scheduled to appear in Stanislaus County Superior Court today, according to the jail's Web site.
Officers were dispatched to the Azevedo home just before 5 p.m. Sunday to investigate a report of a domestic dispute. Police received two calls. The first reported the dispute, and the second reported Sharon Azevedo may have been shot.
The Azevedos were in financial difficulty. Public records show they lost their home to foreclosure in March. Capital One Bank and US Bank also had filed liens totaling nearly $30,000 against the couple after winning civil judgments against them.
On Sunday, police Lt. Rick Armendariz said officers had been at the Azevedo home after domestic disputes in the past. Armendariz did not know how many times.
Neighbors said the Azevedos had lived on Creek Bed Court for more than a decade. Sharon Azevedo's disabled sister lived with them.
Neighbors said Mitch Azevedo was exacting about keeping up his home and yard but had lost interest in the past several months.
Bee assistant librarian Karen Aiello contributed to this report.
