Police in Ohio say a Fort Bragg paratrooper murdered his girlfriend Thursday and later was killed in a shootout with officers.
Pfc. Juvon Williams, 19, was killed by police in Columbus after a chase Friday morning, according to authorities. He was an AH-64 Apache helicopter repairman with 1st Battalion, 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade, according to the 82nd Airborne Division.
Williams, who was from Columbus, was wanted in the murder of his girlfriend, 18-year-old Leigh Belyn, police said. She was shot Thursday about 7:20 p.m. after an argument with Williams.
Division officials said Williams was wanted after authorities found Belyn's body in the trunk of a car.
Police began a search for Williams and spotted his vehicle in the city's northeast side about 2:30 a.m. Friday. Williams saw the officers and tried to escape, leading to a chase that ended when police rammed his vehicle off the road. Williams exchanged gunfire with police and was shot. He died at the scene.
The shooting remains under investigation.
According to the 82nd Airborne Division, Williams joined the Army in August 2010. He was stationed at Fort Bragg in March.
