Phenix City, Ala. --
Phenix City Assistant Police Chief Robert Casteel said 30-year-old Yamisha Thomas' former boyfriend is now being questioned for her murder.
Sylvester Davis was already behind bars for a felony parole violation. The assistant chief said even though her body was discovered last Monday, Thomas' murder may have happened more than a month ago.
Casteel said Thomas may have been killed in mid-April, when her family first reported her missing.
The assistant chief said there is a potential witness in this case. Many family and friends reported seeing a man in handcuffs at the scene the night Thomas' body was discovered. Casteel said that man may play a key role in the future, but is currently in an Alabama jail. He wouldn't say which facility.
Casteel said despite the shallow grave where Thomas was found last week, her body was not dismembered.
You may remember police discovered concrete poured over the grave in a heavily wooded area off of Seale Road in Phenix City.
The assistant chief said the cause of death has not been determined. But pieces of forensic evidence are being tested including potential DNA samples. Casteel said they are waiting on those test before they charge anyone with the murder.
Phenix City Police said because at least one part of the crime occurred in Phenix City they will lead the on-going investigation.
Assistant Police Chief Casteel had a scheduled interview with News 3 Tuesday, but had to attend an urgent meeting at the Russell County District Attorney's Office. After that meeting, Casteel said there would be nothing for him to comment on Tuesday.
Phenix City Investigator, Lieutenant Jason Whitten said the pre-trial publicity may be interfering with the ongoing investigation.
Casteel said there are no other persons of interest at this time.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
