A 49-year-old man from Dayton, Minn., has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with his wife's death, the Twin Cities suburb's first homicide case since 1984.
Police said John Bogema called them at about 4:45 a.m. to report an incident at the couple's home, located at 13831 Vinewood Lane North.
Responding officers pronounced Bogema's 58-year-old wife, Georgia Lee Bogema, dead at the scene.
The Medical Examiner later announced that Georgia Lee Bogema died of multiple sharp force injuries.
According to the criminal complaint, police asked Bogema if he killed his wife, and he answered, "I might have."
The complaint also states that Bogema told the 911 dispatch operater he wasn't feeling well and had mental problems.
Investigating officers spoke with Bogema's son, who said his father had called him in the early morning hours to say he was sorry and would be returning to a mental hospital.
Georgia’s niece, Debra Klenk, spoke at length to FOX 9. Klenk said Bogema has been trying to deal with mental health issues, and spent some time at a mental health facility to address his depression and issues with becoming more aggressive toward his wife.
Family members said that just last week, Georgia talked to her husband of more than 15 years about couples counseling.
Klenk also said her aunt called Bogema’s doctor about adjusting his medication and was told to get the guns out of the house.
Bogema is expected to make his first court appearance Tuesday morning. Meanwhile, family is planning his wife’s funeral for Thursday.
