Stanwood, WA: Stanwood teacher arrested in wife's death

STANWOOD -- A Stanwood Middle School teacher was arrested Wednesday in connection with the death of his wife at their Mount Vernon home.

William R. Rodgers, 49, was being held Thursday at Skagit County Jail for investigation of second-degree murder.

Police were called to the couple's home around 9 a.m. Monday, Mount Vernon police Lt. Chris Cammock said.

Emergency crews found the woman unconscious and not breathing, he said. She died at the scene.

Rodgers told police that his wife, 48, apparently had fallen down a flight of stairs.

Detectives have been collecting evidence and speaking with the couple's friends, Cammock said. They're still early in the investigation, but what they've learned so far is inconsistent with an accidental fall.

Rodgers has taught at Stanwood Middle School since 1996, Stanwood-Camano School District Superintendent Jean Shumate said. He has been placed on unpaid administrative leave.

Anyone with information about the death is asked to call police at 360-336-6271 or 360-428-3211.

We have all lost an amazing person and a wonderful friend. My heart is broken and I will always keep my memories of Sherri in my heart.
My thoughts and prayers go out to her three grown children. Don't ever forget how much your mother loved you and how proud she was of all of you! Rest in Peace dear friend.
