San Antonio, TX: Man shot, killed by police identified

SAN ANTONIO -
San Antonio police identify a man who was shot and killed by one of their officers on the city's Northwest side.

The officer who fired the shot was originally responded to a call for help from the man's girlfriend about 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

When they arrived at the home in the 3700 block of Tupelo Lane, the officers spotted Derrick Smith, 26, running into a bathroom and locking the door, according to Chief William McManus.

Smith already was bleeding from self-inflicted cuts, and because he was injured, McManus says the officers kicked in the bathroom door.

One of the officers then deployed a Taser in order to bring the situation under control.

“It did not work. He ripped out the prongs and advanced toward the officers,.” McManus says. “At that time, one officer, the backup officer, shot and he was killed there in the bathroom."

McManus says Smith was holding a screwdriver at the time.

The officer who fired the shot is on administrative leave.

McManus says he has been with the police department for about a year and a half.
