Sheriff Bill Franklin said an initial suicide investigation became a homicide investigation leading to a murder arrest Saturday in Titus.
Patricia Allen, 31, of 9425 Titus Road was killed Friday night when her common law husband, Jamie Slay, 41, allegedly shot and killed her.
Jamie Slay, 41, told investigators he had consumed 36 beers and at least one fifth and a pint of vodka on Friday leading up to an apparent argument between he and his wife.
“We received a 911 call Friday night from Mr. Slay’s cell phone saying his wife had killed herself,” Franklin said. “Then he hung up, and one of our officers got back in touch with him.”
Franklin said Slay then changed his story and said someone had broken into their home on Titus Road.
“She died from an apparent gunshot wound to the mouth,” Franklin said.
On Saturday, Franklin and investigators talked with Slay about the events leading up to the death of his wife.
By Saturday night, Slay admitted to killing his wife using a .410 shotgun, according to Franklin.
“Investigators found what is believed to be the murder weapon in some heavy wooded brush about 200 yards from the house,” Franklin said.
Slay has been charged with murder and is being held in the Elmore County Jail on a $75,000 bond.
