In 2010 and 2011 Caddo Parish led the state of Louisiana in the number of domestic-related homicides.
At this stage, 2012 is not looking much better.
Shreveport's first homicide of the year involved a man and his girlfriend.
Police say Danny Battle shot and killed LaKeia Rawls during a dispute.
Battle is no stranger to police, he has been in and out of jail since 1995 and charged with more than 70 crimes.
According to police reports, Battle threatened at least one previous girlfriend with a shotgun.
Reports claim that he also threatened his mother with a hammer.
Simone Hennessee with Shreveport's Providence House believes the best way to end what seems like a never-ending cycle of domestic abuse is for law enforcement and the courts to seriously crack down on offenders.
"If they know they're going to go to jail, they're going to think twice about doing it and if they know this community is serious about putting them in jail.. and not letting them plead out... that's going to make all the difference in the world." said Hennessee.
Battle is charged with manslaughter.
