REDONDO BEACH (CBS) — A suspect in the murder of a woman in Redondo Beach was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a three-hour standoff with police in Utah, according to authorities.
Russell Scott Goldberg, 49, was found dead at 9:30 p.m., according to broadcast reports.
Police received a call around 9 a.m. Wednesday — from a woman in New York — for a welfare check of a woman who lived in an apartment in the 1200 block of Agate Street.
“Redondo Beach Police Officers checked the apartment and discovered a deceased female adult in the apartment. Redondo Beach Police Investigators are investigating this incident as a homicide and suspect foul play,” officials said in a statement.
Reporting for CBS2 and KCAL9 Wednesday, Serene Branson reported that the dead man’s ex-wife, 45-year-old Peggy Duffy — who was also the mother of his two children — was identified as the murdered women.
The couple’s children — believed to be a daughter, around 13, and a younger son, were not home at the time of the murder.
Branson also said Redondo police would not disclose how the woman was murdered. But they did say Goldberg was believed to be armed with a handgun and dangerous.
They did say they believe a custody dispute involving the children was the motive. The children are being watched by Child Protective Services.
The standoff with police occurred near Beaver, Utah, said officials.
