Port Wentworth, GA: Port Wentworth man indicted in wife's stabbing death

A Port Wentworth man on Wednesday was indicted on charges of murder and cruelty to children in the July 23 slaying of his wife, Nancy Sanders.

Kenneth Sanders, 47,committed murder by stabbing and cutting his wife, 28, the Chatham County grand jury said.

They also charged Sanders with felony murder by causing her death during an aggravated assault, a felony, with a knife.

Port Wentworth police said Sanders stabbed his wife to death at their home in front of her three daughters, ages 4, 7, and 9.

The victim brought home a cake and ice cream to celebrate Sanders birthday when the crimes occurred.

The 7-year-old, her hand covered in blood, ran to a neighbor’s home, telling her, “Can you help me because my daddy is stabbing my mother,” neighbor LaVonya Oliver told police.

The indictment includes six counts of cruelty to children and a single count of possession of a firearm or knife during the commission of certain crimes, accusing Sanders of having a knife with a blade of three inches or more.

The cruelty charges involve Sanders causing cruel and excessive mental pain to one of the children by stabbing the victim in front of the child.
