CALHAN, Colo. -- Friends of Robert Miles identified him as the victim of a deadly shooting in Calhan Saturday night. The killing may have been the result of a love triangle--friends said Miles, 55, was shot at the home where his ex-girlfriend now lives with another man.
There have been no arrests. The El Paso County Sheriff's Office said the couple at the home in the 15000 block of North Ellicott Highway called 911 at about 7:40 p.m. to report a break-in. A spokesperson said it's not clear whether it was the man or the woman who shot the victim.
Miles' friends tell a different story of the night's events. They said they were with him when his ex-girlfriend repeatedly called and texted him, urging him to come over.
"She called, like, 20 times while we were sitting around the table, begging him to come over," said Trent Svitaka, who said Miles was his landlord. "He was worried it was a set up because she said she had candles lit and had cooked a big dinner and her boyfriend was gone for three weeks."
Svitka and Miles' friend Robert Sandage said they told Miles not to go.
"He went anyway because he had been drinking," said Sandage.
Sandage said Miles had told them to come look for him in the morning if they didn't hear from him. The two men did that on Sunday, before they said they went to police and found out it was Miles who had been killed.
Investigators have not named anyone involved in the shooting. According to county records, the Calhan home belongs to Mark Manyik. KRDO Newschannel 13 obtained the police scanner recordings from the incident. It indicated deputies had been to the property before.
"I've dealt with this individual before, he can be extremely dangerous," said a first responder. "Be advised he has a lot of weapons in the house."
The sheriff's office said an autopsy on the victim is scheduled for Monday, and the investigation into this case continues. PrintEmail
