LAKE GEORGE -- A man from western New York shot his daughters to death and then killed himself at a local campground Monday, Warren County Sheriff Bud York said.
The bodies of Adam P. Parcells, 29; Noel Parcells, 10; and Mia Parcells, 3, were discovered by the owner of the Adirondack Camping Village about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, York said. The family checked in Saturday and set up a tent. The campground owner noticed the hatchback of their car up on Monday and in the same position the next day. When he looked closer, he saw the bodies inside. When Adam Parcells' body fell, it apparently caused the tent to collapse, York said.
Police discovered a Hi-Point .45-caliber rifle in the tent along with a teddy bear and children's books. York said both girls were shot more than once. They may have been asleep when their father started firing, he said. Police interviewed other campers who were staying in the 168-site campground on Finkle Farm Road, but no one reported hearing gunshots. Heavy rain Monday night would have muffled the sound, York said.
"I've seen a lot of things over the years, but never anything like this," said York, a 30-year veteran of the State Police before he retired and was elected sheriff. "It's a sad day."
The girls have different mothers. According to police, Mia Parcells and her father shared an address. York said Parcells and his wife may have separated recently and public records show Parcells' wife, Marcie, filed for divorce in July. Noel Parcells' mother reported her missing to Rochester police on Friday, but no Amber Alert was issued. Rochester police did not return phone calls Tuesday.
Autopsies will be performed Wednesday at Albany Medical Center.
