Husband charged with murder at Smyrna residence
SMYRNA — A domestic dispute led to a double shooting Friday morning that left one woman dead and her mother in critical condition, according to police.
Charles Ifedi Godspower, 39, was taken into custody without incident and he later confessed to shooting the two women at 920 Sky Valley Trail, according to Sgt. Bobby Gibson.
"He had already put down the firearm by the time we got there," Gibson said of Godspower, who was still at the house when police arrived.
Briana M. Brown, 22, was pronounced dead at the scene. She was found in a vehicle in her driveway when she was shot, Gibson said.
Her mother, Diana Glover, 49, was flown by LifeFlight helicopter from the parking lot of nearby LifePoint Church to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville just after 11 a.m. She successfully underwent a surgery and was listed in critical condition Friday, Gibson said.
Glover is also a resident of 920 Sky Valley Trail.
Godspower, who does not live at the Sky Valley Trail residence, was charged with especially aggravated kidnapping, first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and violation of order of protection. He was processed on a $1 million bond and was transported to the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center.
A citizen of Nigeria who is in America legally, Godspower has a former name of Charles I. Okaphor, according to Gibson.
Godspower and Brown have a child together, according to police. The child was not at the residence Friday morning and is currently staying with family.
Brown filed an assault report at the Smyrna Police Department on June 21, according to Gibson. The report listed Godspower as the suspect in the assault. As a result of the report, Brown was directed to the Domestic Violence Program of Rutherford County where she pursued and obtained an ex parte order of protection against Godspower.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
