LONGMONT, Colo. -- A Longmont man who had custody of his 3-year-old daughter for the weekend shot and killed her and then shot and killed himself, police said Monday.
The bodies of the girl and her 38-year-old father were discovered by police Sunday afternoon after the girl's mother called for a welfare check, Longmont Commander Jeff Satur said.
The girl's mother had called her estranged husband and because he would not answer his phone, she drove to the home on the 1200 block of Red Mountain Drive to pick up her daughter, Satur said.
The woman told police the house was locked in a weird way, so she became concerned and called police.
Police found the father and daughter dead in the master bedroom. Officers found a lengthy note, but Satur could not go into the details of what it contained.
The child’s mother and father have been separated for about three months, Satur said. The man had no restraining order, he had partial custody of the girl and the girl was with him this weekend as part of the custody arrangements, Satur said.
Many Longmont police officers are struggling with the case because many have young children themselves, Satur said.
"This is a tragedy all around," Satur said.
The names of the girl and her father will not be released until an autopsy is completed by the Boulder County Coroner's Office Tuesday morning, Satur said.
