Chicago, IL: Cops: Man deliberately run over, killed by own car

A 41-year-old man was intentionally run over by his own car and killed as he tried to defend a female friend on the city's Southwest Side early this morning, police said.

Two men were being questioned in the attack, which happened about 12:27 a.m. on the 4000 block of South Kedzie Avenue, police said.

Raul Medina, of the 2100 block of South Albany Avenue, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to a spokesman for the Cook County medical examiner's office.

The initial police investigation indicates Medina was sitting in what WGN-TV video shows was a Ford sedan talking with two female passengers when two men or boys came up and one began arguing with one of the passengers, believed to be his girlfriend, said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli.

The argument became a fight, and the man identified as Medina got out of the car to try to intervene and defend the woman, Mirabelli said.

Somehow, the two male attackers overpowered Medina and got into the car. They drove off at high speed, then made a U-turn and ran over the victim, Mirabelli said. The car also hit a utility pole, possibly injuring the two attackers. When police arrived, they were able to quickly catch two people, who were being questioned in connection with the killing, Mirabelli said.

Wentworth Area detectives were investigating.
