The murder trial for a man accused of the 2006 slaying of his girlfriend, a University of Central Florida student, will begin next week.
Loc Buu Tran is accused of stabbing his girlfriend to death when she tried to break up with him.
A judge declared a mistrial in August after realizing that she had worked on the case while employed by the public defender's office.
His trial was suppose to start today but was postponed a week.
Tran, 33, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Nhat Anh Tran, who was a 20-year-old forensic-science major at UCF.
The day before she died, Nhat Anh Tran — known as Anh — broke off the yearlong relationship with Loc Tran.
The two are not related.
Nhat Anh Tran lived with two sisters and another roommate in an off-campus house on Cypress Trail Drive.
They found her body the next morning along with Loc Tran, who suffered self-inflicted stab wounds.
In 1998, Loc Tran was convicted of raping a Clearwater woman who had rejected him. He received two years' probation and was labeled a registered sex offender.

A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
