An apparent murder-suicide in Oregon that wiped out an entire family has hit close to home. Robert Bryant and his family moved to McMinnville, Oregon, from the foothill community of Shingle Springs eight months ago.

Investigators still don't know why Bryant killed his wife and four children, then turned the gun on himself. Investigators believe the shooting happened around February 23rd, shortly after the children stopped showing up for school.

Motive for the murder-suicide is unknown, but Bryant filed for bankruptcy before leaving California. The family also had a falling out with the local Jehovah's Witness Congregation in Shingle Springs.

Former neighbors in Shingle Springs say the Bryants were pleasant, but kept to themselves. They say the murder-suicide seems out of character with the people they knew as neighbors. "I'm really sad," said Carmen Halfman. "She called us about a month ago. They said things were going smooth. They were going to build a house on two acres and that was about it. That was the last we heard of them."

Halfman said she feels the loss of the four children most acutely. "They were great kids, they were very well mannered even when they called me grandma," said former neighbor Carmen Halfman. "They were great kids, great kids."

Police originally came to the Bryant home after neighbors reported that telephone calls and knocks on the door went unanswered. On Friday, two officers spotted the bodies after using a ladder to look inside the windows of the Bryant home.
