SHELBY, N.C. -- Shelby police are investigating what appeared to be a murder-suicide early Saturday morning.
Police were dispatched to a home on Churchill Drive in reference to a 911 hangup. Upon arrival, officers were confronted by a man armed with a handgun threatening to kill himself police said.
A standoff ensued with the man.
During the standoff, police learned that a female in the house had been shot and there were two children inside.
Officers were able to get the children out of the home and they were taken to family members who were at the scene.
A short time later, officers said they heard a gunshot go off inside the home.
When police were finally able to get inside the home, they found both the man and woman dead, authorities said.
Police are not releasing the names of the victims.
