NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The family of a woman who was bludgeoned to death with a hammer last year is suing the Franklin Police Department, saying it didn’t do enough to protect her.
Rikki White was killed in her driveway Feb. 19 as her children watched.
Antonio Forrest, her former boyfriend, is accused of killing her.
White had been attacked by Forrest three times in the weeks before her death, according to a civil suit filed by Nashville attorney Rocky McElhaney.
The suit quoted police and court reports that show White had, during those three attacks, been punched, strangled, had her eye blackened, her foot broken, and her kidney lacerated.
According to a lawsuit filed Thursday, Forrest told Franklin police detective Becky Johnson while he was in custody that he planned to kill White. He was released on bond anyway, the suit said.
"It's the family's information that Detective Johnson never took steps once Mr. Forrest told her that he was going to kill Rikki White to advise Miss White of that threat, or to advise her superiors," McElhaney said.
The Franklin Police Department spokesman said the department had not yet been served with the lawsuit and could not comment.
