HOUSTON -- A man has been arrested after he allegedly killed his estranged wife and daughter in southeast Houston, KPRC Local 2 reported Friday.
Houston police said Jaime Pero Cole, 38, fatally shot Melissa Dawn Cole, 31, and her daughter, Alecia Desire Castillo, 15, at an apartment complex on F.M. 1959 near Gulfstream Park on Thursday at about 8:30 p.m. The couple was estranged and going through a divorce, police said.
Investigators said Jaime Cole went to the apartment to drop off the couple's two sons and he got into a fight with Melissa Cole.
The 15-year-old tried to intervene in the fight, detectives said. Police said Jaime Cole pulled out a gun and shot both Melissa Cole and Castillo multiple times.
Jaime Cole left the apartment with his 2-year-old son, investigators said. He left his 10-year-old son behind, officials said.
A 9-year-old female cousin of the boy was also left at the apartment, investigators said.
Neighbor Shannon Cole said she took care of them after the shooting and until police arrived.
"What we all tried to do was keep the kids calm," she said. "I just got both of the children and got them as far away as I could. They were very brave. I've never met two braver children than those two."
Shannon Cole, a former paramedic, is not related to Jaime Cole.
An Amber Alert was issued for the 2-year-old, but it was canceled when the two were spotted at a Walmart store on U.S. Highway 59 in Wharton by Texas Department of Public Safety troopers. The boy was OK.
Jaime Cole was taken into custody and charged with capital murder.
