A 42-year-old Detroit man is dead, shot outside his ex-girlfriend’s apartment despite a restraining order against him, according to police.

Investigators have a relative of the woman in custody after the 3:30 a.m. shooting Sunday in the block of 9300 E. Jefferson, Detroit Police spokesman John Roach said.

Kamal Abdullah-Karim, 42, was found in the hallway, shot dead by a 25-year-old relative of the woman.

“It appears to be an outgrowth of a long, ongoing domestic abuse situation with the female who lives at the apartment and her ex,” Roach said. “There is a long history of physical abuse that’s been documented.”

The woman called police when she realized Karim was in the building, he added.

“Then we got a second call at 3:30 (a.m.) that there were shots fired, and the victim was found on the floor with a gunshot wound to the stomach,” Roach said.

Evidence in the case is expected to be presented to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office today to determine whether the 25-year-old should be charged.
