PHOENIX - Phoenix police arrested a 36-year-old man after a woman was shot and her son was fatally wounded early Monday.
Police responded to a shots fired call at an apartment complex located at Black Canyon Freeway and Orangewood Avenue.
Officers arrived and found 31-year-old Michael Carter dead from gunshot wounds. His mother, 51-year-old Joanne Deanda, was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries.
Investigators say that Carter had a verbal altercation with his sister's ex-boyfriend, Joseph B. Ochoa, at the front door of the apartment.

During the altercation, Carter was shot and killed. The gunman then shot the victim's mother.
The gunman fled. Phoenix police spokesman Officer Luis Samudio said 36-year-old Ochoa was later arrested near State Route 51 and Thomas Road in Phoenix.
Ochoa is facing murder and attempted murder charges.
