LOS ANGELES -- Police fatally shot a man who called 911 early Saturday morning to say he had killed his girlfriend.
The man called police around 3:25 a.m., and officers responding to 3107 Midvale Ave. found the man outside the residence.
He appeared to have a handgun and an officer involved shooting occurred, according to Los Angeles police Officer Norma Eisenman of the Media Relations Section.
The girlfriend was not actually injured, Eisenman said.
"It appears to be suicide by cop," she said, adding that detectives believe the man was an out-of-work contractor.
Eisenman would not say how many shots were fired or how many officers were involved.
It was also unclear if a handgun was recovered at the scene.
Detectives remained at the residence investigating the incident.
